The Pan-American Institute of Naval Engineering - IPEN is a non-profit institution intended to promote progress in naval architecture and marine engineering and water transportation in the Americas.

The membership of IPEN includes Individual Members, such as engineers, technicians and students engaged in maritime activities; Supporting Members that is, shipping companies, shipyards and other related industries; and Patronal Members, like the Pan-American Navies. Besides, there are the National Members, composed by the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and related societies.

The IPEN headquarters and the Office of the Executive Secretary are located in Rio de Janeiro, The latter coordinates the activities of the Institute's Directors and those of other related organizations.

Every two years the General Assembly elects new members of the Board of Directors and of the Advisory Council, at the Pan-American Conference of Naval Engineering, Maritime Transportation and Port Engineering, held in the country chosen by the previous Assembly.

The IPEN funds come from annual membership dues according to the following rates:

National Members - 300,00
Patronal Members - 1.500,00
Supporting Members - 300,00
Individual Members - 30,00

A permanent program of training in both Pan-American and overseas shipyards is kept by IPEN. Through this program many engineers and technicians have known the facilities of shipyards and related industries, aiming to refine their professional background and to transfer technical know-how.

IPEN also kept a systematic and permanent dissemination of the development of the naval engineering and water transportation, either by means of a monthly bulletin (IPEnternet News), via Internet, or through a magazine (IPEN Journal) which generally is issued in the symposia hold in each country.

Copies of technical papers presented at their conferences or another technical meetings are available to all Members, besides the facility of locating technical papers in other libraries whenever requested.

Finally, the IPEN hold a Pan-American Conference in one of the member-countries every two years. The meeting allows the rejoining f members to discuss specific problems, to exchange valuable information and experiences and live in a very intensive way the Pan-American fraternization.
