XXI COPINAVAL Committee meets on January – The Organizing Committee of XXI IPEN Congress will meet next January to, among other matters, analyze the summaries of works received until now, and the options of paths for the extension of the event up to the city of Valdivia, considering a proposal for a naval seminar among the beautiful landscapes of the South of Chile.

Congress in Colombia gathers strength – The first International Congress of Naval Design and Engineering– CIDIN’09 gains a new impulse as a result of the growing national and international support. The event will take place in the Convention Center “Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala”, in Cartagena, Colombia, from March 25 to 27, 2009, together with the maritime exhibition Colombiamar’ 09. RBNA reissues regulation about confined spaces – The Brazilian Register of Vessels and Aircrafts -RBNA has just reissued regulation about confined spaces. If you want to obtain this regulation, free of charge, you only have to ask for it to this Secretariat through this e-mail address: ipen@terra.com.br .

Association of Chilean Engineers chooses new Board of Directors – At the end of last November the new Board of Directors of the Chilean Association of Engineers and Naval Constructors was chosen. The new Board of Directors is the following: President: Oscar Cartes Zurita; Vice-president: Nelson Ramírez Carrión; Treasurer: Andrés Olivares Soriano; Secretary: Hernán Orellana. The next meeting of the Association will take place on Friday, January 16, 2009.

Fontem issues more papers of SYMBARGE – New works of the First Symposium about barges for Hydro-ways-Symbarge 2008 are available in the website of Fontem ( www.fontem.com ). This Symposium took place last month in Montevideo. New papers are the following: “Study of planning for maritime transport of products coming from oil”; “Training for tests with dynamic positioning systems”; “The Hidro-way Paraguay- Paraná and environmental protection (presentation and y video)”; “ Uma investigação numérica do efeito de histerese em vibração induzida por vórtices aobre um cilindro rígido elasticamente apoiado”.

Apprenticeship Program for 2009 – Apprenticeships in Brasil (Brazilian Register of Vessels and Aircrafts), Colombia (Cotecmar) and Uruguay (Tsakos and Scra Shipyards) are available. The interested persons – only students, preferable in their last grade – must send the applications through their respective National Directors to this Secretariat, which will direct them to whom it may concern, confirming economic conditions in which they will be received. Practices last between 2 and 3 months. Students must present certificates of good health and accident international insurance.

Welding course in Guayaquil – Eng. Juan Antonio Alonso, IPEN Official Consultant for welding and metallurgy affaires, is preparing a course to be held in Guayaquil, in the middle of next January, a course about modern processes of welding. This course is supported by ASTINAVE, Maridueña and Colimpo dry docks.

Port Cities: Congress and Exhibition in Guayaquil – The Maritime Chamber of Ecuador is organizing the event “Port Cities – Exhibition and Congreso”, which will take place from August 11 to 14, 2009, in the Convention Center of Guayaquil. The aim of this event is to show services and benefits that importers, exporters and members of the international commerce can offer to Guayaquil and its industry. Sails South America 2010 – On the occasion of the Bicentenary of the formation of the firsts National Board of Government (1810-2010), The Navies of Chile and Argentina have joined in order to organize a Continental Maritime Event, and hereby to adhere to the celebrations which will take place in both countries to commemorate this transcendental historical event. In order to add to this celebration it has been considered to carry out during the first semester of 2010 an “International Event and Regatta of Big Sails”. Brigs, frigates, schooners and corvettes of various countries, civilian and military, will sail the seas of South America, starting in Rio de Janeiro and finishing in Veracruz.

Advertising in the IPEN website – A page in the web site of IPEN (www.ipen.org.br) has been created. In this page it is published all information on products and/or services of their Collective Members (MC) and Individuals (MI), without cost. The interested persons should direct their ads through their respective National Directors. In addition, the site offers banners in the different sections of the site, with a small cost. Note of New Year’s Eve– Now, that the end of 2008 is coming, the Executive Secretariat of IPEN America, on behalf of IPEN Directorate, greets all our members, friends and collaborators, wishing them a new year with a lot of health, peace and prosperity. We hope to enter 2009 with a renewed enthusiasm, being able to continue working for the development of the Naval Engineering and Water Transports in the Americas. We wish you very happy Holidays
